Rise in construction to create thousands of jobs
A boom in construction is set to creat more than 2,000 new jobs per year in the West Midlands between now and 2019. The posts are part of an estimated 224,000 new jobs which will be created nationwide over the next five years, says the Construction Industry Training Board - CITB. The estimate of more than 40,000 new jobs needed every year is 8,000 more than previously predicted.
Firms are aiming to take on new staff
According to a recent survey by the REC (Recruitment and Emloyment Confederation) of 600 companies, four out of five firms intend to take on permanent employees.
Chief Executive Kevin Green said: "Businesses are increasingly thinking about expanding their numbers and many are telling us that they can't take on more work without employing more staff".
"At the same time, the UK is suffering from skills shortages across the economy and it's getting harder for hirers to attract and retain the talent they need."
"Employers should seek to improve recruitment practices and tap into talent pools that might have been overlooked. For example, we have one million 50-64 year olds who have been made redundant in the UK, and that's a huge amount of skill and experience."
